Commission for Environmental Cooperation
CCEA has contributed to the development and use of both terrestrial and marine ecosystem frameworks used as a basis for North American conservation planning and reporting for this NAFTA agency.

CCEA works in partnership with many agencies and organizations across Canada and throughout the world. Council is especially responsive to inter-jurisdictional, regional and/or large ecosystem needs of Canada’s provinces and territories.

CCEA regularly holds its meetings in different Canadian jurisdictions to discuss common issues and to address particular regional issues and achievements. CCEA often takes the unique role of threading together diverse regional viewpoints to achieve a larger cohesive ecological picture of relevance to all jurisdictions.

Its leadership on terrestrial ecosystem representation, a national framework for protected areas, approaches to gap analyses, marine conservation areas and data management are indicative of systemic work serving widespread jurisdictional and Canadian needs.

Within these agencies and organizations, CCEA solicits input from a wide range of conservation policy makers and practitioners. Consequently, CCEA provides a highly effective communications network for governmental protected areas workers in Canada, and a responsive forum for policy formulation, technical development and transfer, and professional development.

Internationally, many organizations have benefited from CCEA’s expertise. Organizations such as the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), the governments of Zimbabwe and Mexico, the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), the World Conservation Union (IUCN), the World Conservation Monitoring Center (WCMC), the Science and Management of Protected Areas Association (SAMPAA), and the George Wright Society are a few examples.

With increasing emphasis on globalization, CCEA’s international portfolio is of ever-increasing importance and highly relevant to regional and national Canadian efforts to fulfill international obligations such as those contained in the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity. CCEA’s unique inclusive structure and mandate enable it to address many large-scale issues relevant to all Canadian jurisdictions.
